A+

Yet again Rowling is able to deliver an exciting and fast-paced adventure full of mystery, suspense, magic, and fun. Harry Potter and the usual crew return to Hogwarts for their second year where they take part in new classes and new adventures. Much like the first novel, Chamber of Secrets is an excellent fantasy/mystery that children and adults alike can enjoy time and time again. The Harry Potter novels began showing up on store shelves in America in about 1998, but new readers are discovering their magic everyday. I have to admit that I watched the first four movies before picking up Sorcerer’s Stone at the local library while on college break last winter. I quickly read through all six novels and I have now began to read through them for a second time. I had no idea that a series of novels could be so engaging. Once you pick up the first novel, you can hardly rest until you have read them all.

Chamber of Secrets is much like Sorcerer’s Stone in that it is primarily a standalone adventure, complete from beginning to end. In this one we see Harry, Ron and Hermoine in their second year at Hogwarts, the addition of Professor Lockhart as Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor, and new threat to the students that leads the main characters on a wild adventure yet again.

In this adventure, Harry and his companions put it upon themselves to solve the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets and the Heir of Slytherin, while attempting to avert suspicion that the heir is, in fact, Harry himself. Harry has begun to develop very strong and unique magical powers and many have taken notice.

All in all, Rowling’s second work is just as much fun as the first, very engaging and entertaining and full of humor. In my opinion, Rowling’s novels are must-reads. Despite the fact that Chamber of Secrets is intended for kids, its a great read for all.
