Battlestar Galactica: Revelations

Last week I was on vacation in Alaska and I got behind on Battlestar Galactica. I missed the last two episodes of 2008, but now that I’ve caught up, I wanted to share a few comments. “Revelations” was the mid-season finale and apparently the last until 2009 thanks to the Writers Guild strike. Overall, I thought the episode was very entertaining and I can’t wait until we get to see the final ten episodes.
So far I’ve been pretty pleased with this season. The first half started off really well, held fairly steady for the next eight episodes, and then concluded very well with “Revelations.” I’ve definitely enjoyed the episodes, but I’m not sure that they have been quite as good as some in previous seasons. Sometimes the plots have seemed to be a bit thin, but still entertaining. I think it was probably a good decision to wrap up the show after this season, because now it will go out on a high note and avoid taking the inevitable downward spiral of all shows that outstay their welcome.
As mentioned before, I really liked “Revelations.” I was very pleased that the four Cylons living among the fleet were finally revealed. It was just so powerful seeing the look of betrayal in Kara’s eyes and seeing Admiral Adama completely break down. It was also interesting to see how Colonel Tigh, Chief Tyrol, and Anders opted not to join the Cylons when given the choice, especially after Torre jumped on that train without hesitation.
Now about Starbuck’s fighter…could it be the fifth Cylon? I don’t think its out of the question, though up until watching the last episode, I had only speculated about certain “human” characters. I think I’ll be rather disappointed if that is the case; it would just be so lame. Not to mention, D’Anna should be able to recognize the final Cylon and gave no indication that it was the fighter.
What surprised me the most about the episode was that the fleet actually found Earth. I really did not believe that the fleet would find it until the final episode of the season, even after it was discovered that Starbuck’s fighter still held the signal. The episode really ended up feeling like the series finale and not the mid-season finale. When I realized that the fleet was actually going to reach Earth in the episode, I realized that there must be some kind of catch, something that would require another ten episodes. When the boarding party landed, they found only ruins of the glorified civilization of the lost colony. I’m not sure exactly what they were expecting to find (I guess I had never really thought about what would be on the planet once they got there), but everyone seemed pretty disappointed. I’m really interested to find out what happens next. I don’t think they have any other choice, but to move in…but what happened to the civilizations of Earth? We’ll just have to wait and see.
